Heavy Truck Registrations Expire December 31 (Published 09-30-2021)
(Bradenton, FL) Heavy truck registrations will expire December 31. However, due to a change in Florida Statute 320.055 that took effect September 1, 2020, the expiration date for truck registrations with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 5,001 pounds to 7,999 pounds has changed to the first registered owner's birthday, unless the owner is a business.Individuals with truck registrations that meet this criteria and were issued prior to September 1, 2020, will have the option to renew their registration to their birthday of 2022 or 2023. Trucks with a GVW of 5,001 pounds or more owned by a business will continue to expire each year on December 31.
Heavy truck renewal notices are mailed in late September. Even if the renewal notice is not received, the new decal for those vehicles must be affixed to license plates by January 1. Renew online now to ensure delivery well before the expiration date.
"We have had record numbers of customers renewing online at taxcollector.com or on a renewal kiosk at participating Publix stores because it's fast, easy, and efficient," said Tax Collector Ken Burton Jr. "If you have your renewal notice or license plate number and date of birth, you can quickly renew and pay by credit or debit card. If you choose to use a kiosk, your new registration and decal print instantly and you're done."
Most trucks are eligible for a two-year registration; however, there are exceptions. Trucks with an empty weight of 8,000 pounds or more can register for only one year at a time.
Some trucks are not eligible for online or kiosk renewals; for example, trucks with a GVW of 26,001 pounds or more must show higher liability insurance coverage. Additionally, trucks with a GVW of 55,000 pounds or more must show proof of payment of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (IRS Form 2290). View our Heavy Truck FAQ for complete details.
