Hunter Education
Law: Florida Statute 372.5717 requires that anyone born on or after June 1, 1975, who has reached his or her 16th birthday, must complete an approved Hunter Education course to be able to purchase a hunting license. In other words, only when an individual turns 16 will they be required to pass a State sponsored Hunter Education Course. Effective August 1, 2006, anyone who is 16 years or older and born on or after May 31, 1975 can hunt under the direct supervision of a licensed hunter, 21 years or older, without having to first complete the Hunter Education Safety Course. This newly established “Hunter Safety Deferral” enables “new” hunters to purchase a Florida hunting license and hunt during a one-year trial basis. Individuals that take advantage of the one-year deferral will have to take and pass a hunter safety course to be eligible to purchase a hunting license in the future.

these classes by calling the Hunter Education Division in
Lakeland at (863) 648-3206 The class size is limited to 45.
Note to Parents: Parents or legal guardians are required
to accompany children under 16 to all classes. Parents of
children under 18 must register with the instructor and should
plan to spend at least the first hour with the class. If weekend
classes are available in your area, you should consider that
young children will have difficulty in passing the weekend
program. The problem for children stems from the amount of
material and the consecutive hours of intense classroom work.
Weeknight programs tend to be less intense and more thorough
in the review of the materials; therefore, they are more suitable
for children.
