What are the penalties for tourist tax non-compliance?
This answer has been viewed 2414 times and was last updated on 09/15/2017.
If tourist taxes aren't remitted properly and on time, the penalties for non-compliance can be costly. If a tax return is delinquent, multiple penalties apply. Here are just a few:
- Loss of the collection allowance (discount)
- A 10% penalty or $50.00, whichever is greater
- Interest (currently a floating rate set by the Florida Department of Revenue)
If a payment is returned for any reason, a returned check charge ranging from $25.00 to $100.00 (depending on the face amount of the payment) will apply. The above penalties may also apply, depending on when the bad check is redeemed.
If non-compliance continues, a warrant could be filed, and additional fees (including but not limited to attorney fees and court costs) will be charged. A warrant is a lien placed on your property.
